Putao & the Eastern Himalaya
Putao is reachable, for tourists, only by air. The remote Myanmar Eastern Himalaya is renowned for it’s mind blowing panoply of birds and rare orchids, including the most rare of all, the black orchid. On average, 35 new species a year are discovered in Myanmar’s Himalaya region. Not exactly a new species but certainly one that should be on the endangered list, are the Tarong People. Even smaller than the African Pygmy, the Tarong rarely reach even 4-feet in height. There numbers are thought to be in the low hundreds, but nobody seems to be sure. They are not exactly easy to find, the nearest being a full 7-day trek from Putao. Wanna go?
The Malikha Lodge is a far and away the best luxury tour option in the region.
