Nyaung Oak Ruins
The mysterious ruins of Nyaung Oak, near the village of Indein on Lake Inle, make for a great day trip for those staying on the lake. Why are the dozens of ancient temples and 1,054 zedis there and who constructed them, no one seems to know, only that they were built before the Intha and Pa O settled in the area several some 8 centuries ago.
You arrive via the lake and river to the village of Indein, which holds the largest and most colorful 5 day market. Easy to spend an hour or so exploring the ruins. For the more adventurous, you can climb a nearby hill for views over the lake. There is also a Pa O village within walking distance. 90% of tourists never make it outside the market area, which is their loss!
